Mental Snacking and Nibbling During My First Pregnancy

Everybody’s Waiting

Animals Nursery Waiting

I pass by the baby’s room several times a day (and night on the way to the bathroom) and involuntarily glance in each time I do. Everything in there looks expectant. The crib seems to glance up at me hopefully to see if I’m stopping in to introduce its occupant. The glider leans forward in anticipation, only to settle back and kick up on its own ottoman. The changing pad calls attention to the ointments and wipes and diapers in a reporting-for-duty (heh. “duty”.) kind of way. The toys and animals peer down with expressions of excited readiness. We wonder if they’ll break out in applause when we finally bring the baby home.

Meanwhile, we wait.

Topher has started carrying his phone at all times, just in case. I sent directions to the hospital to my parents. Friends and family email and call to check in daily. The doctor reminds me that first babies often come late.

We’re continuously asked if we’re “ready”, which seems like a silly question to me. Is anyone ever ready for parenthood. Maybe they think they are, but what do they know, really? We’re prepared with equipment, clothes, books (a.k.a. instruction manuals), but I think the moose on the toy shelf feels readier than we do.

While we count down the days to the estimated due date (March 5), people increasingly weigh in with what they think we’re having. The cashier at the grocery store this week informed me that she knows I’m having a boy. A good friend is certain it’s a girl. My OB said,“I can’t wait to find out what it is!”

We’re all wondering and waiting, so a poll seems like a good way to pass the time now.

  1. This will be fun, win or lose. :)

I say a boy born on March 6 (because I’ll be out of town with no phone or internet access, so it will have to be then). Weight, 8 lbs 5 oz.

  2. Ok, I’m SO bad at this, even for my own kids, but I’ll play :)

My guess is a little girl on March 4 – 8 lbs. 3 oz

Either way, best of luck and praying for a fast, easy labor and delivery for you!

  3. I say a boy, born March 15. 8 lbs even. You’re never ready and always ready. You are going to be great.

  4. I say a boy born on March 9 weighing 7lbs 15 oz.
Can’t wait to hear the news.

  5. I’m thinking it’s a girl, arriving on March 2nd. 7 lbs. 5oz.

I’m going with a boy….weighing in at 110oz…in the red and gold trunks, hailing from Philadelphia, PA (sorry)….born on March 8, the feast day of St. John of God, and therefore, you will name him Shamgod Wow Mataraza Desmond, in honer of this feast day and my favorite TV product Shamwow.

  9. Chris, 110 ounces as in 6 lb 14 oz or am I reading that wrong?

  10. chrissy's kate Says:

    March 9th

    8 lbs 3 oz

  11. A girl born on March 8th weighing 8lbs 2oz.
(March 8th because the in-laws will be in town so I
can leave Owen with them and come see you guys at
the hospital…sorry, selfish wishful thinking). ;-)

  12. Definitely a boy (we love boys!)born on March 6 weighing 7 lbs 2 oz. Can’t wait to meet him!

  13. Definitely a boy. March 2. 7 lbs 3.

And that moose just may have a nose pregnancy, which would explain its look of nervous anticipation.

  14. Same as Soltis, except 109 ounces.

  15. We went to 42 weeks with our first, so I’m going to extrapolate and guess late… how about March 13, boy, 8 lb 9 oz?

Enjoy these last few days of anticipation before you get to enjoy all that comes later! I agree with the comment above — never ready, and always ready.

  16. I have never played this game before so I have had no previous luck. I need a fellow boy in this group so I say… a baby boy desmond, March 10, 8lbs even – We will be waiting here in Texas with you :)

  17. My vote is: Baby Boy Desmond, born Tuesday March 2nd, weighing in at 7lbs 11oz.

  18. I’m ever so hopeful for a girl so that our girls can be as close as we are! 10 March weighing in at 8 pounds, 10 ounces. And probably about 23 inches long – all leg!

  19. Chrissy’s guess:
    A girl, March 9, 7lbs 8 oz

    Eric’s guess:
    A girl, March 7, 7lbs 4 oz

  20. Hey Tara! So excited for you. I had a girl on Feb. 1 and she’s amazing. My completely uneducated guess is that you’ll have a girl, too, on March 10. Weight: 7 lbs 6 oz. Enjoy the ride–I’m sure it’s going to be incredible!

  21. I’m going to say girl on march 2nd, 7 lbs 9oz. So excited for you guys!

  22. Martha aka "Nana" Says:

I guessed once before – but don’t remember – I think I had you delvering a boy before due date – now – gotta say – seems like it may be a bit later than that – just for fun – Sunday, 3/14 8 lbs and 8 will be the lucky number since 3/14 adds to eight and baby weighs 8. don’t care about gender – healthy is wish! Some say hiccups indicate girl, Helen needs a playmate – your folks need a grandson – whatever – healthy! Just hope the name isn’t some crazy person in the family tree that has been “kept” from you guys all these years ;-) In other words, anxious to hear! Love Love Love you!!!

  23. Martha, if the name we choose is linked to some family lunatic we’ve never met, don’t tell us.

  24. The Research King Says:

    8lbs 3oz
    March 9

    Shakira Desmond come on down!

  25. Love this! I’m always wrong, but it won’t deter me :) I’ll say baby BOY on March 8 weighing in at 8 lbs 6 oz. Wow, super random but SO fun!

  26. I’m pretty sure a baby boy is coming tonight or early tomorrow morning. He will be at least 7 pounds 11 ounces, but I’m guessing he’ll weigh in closer to 8-2. And he will be incredibly handsome (incidentally, if I’m wrong and she’s a girl, I know she’ll be a lovely little thing too). I can’t wait to hear the news!

  27. Julia Petkun Says:

Hi there! So exciting! Baby boy – 7 pounds 9 ounces. I am guessing he will come March 4! Can’t wait to meet the new addition!

  28. I don’t know why, but Eric and I both think that you’re about to meet your little boy. We’ll say March 8, weighing in at 8 lbs. 7 oz. We can’t wait to meet him (or her)!

  29. So exciting – thinking of you all the time now! Here’s my guess: March 7th – an adorable little boy weighing in at 7 lbs. 12 oz. Can’t wait to hear the news!
